Polling session overview

Overview​

A polling session is a polling-type assignment in your course. Teaching-team members use the Instructor Polling Headquarters to open in-class polling activities, end them when class moves on, and review closed-poll results.

Open a polling session​

  1. Open your course and select Assignments.
  2. Select a polling session from the list, or choose New Polling Session in the sidebar to create one (paid courses).

The assignment detail view shows Instructor Polling Headquarters and the activity lists below it.

Create or edit a polling session​

From the assignments sidebar:

  1. Select New Polling Session (or edit an existing polling session from the list).
  2. In the modal, set the session name, due date, objectives, and optional Assess Automatically proficiency percentages.
  3. Save to return to the polling assignment details page.

On free courses, New Polling Session may be disabled with upgrade messaging.

Open and manage polling activities​

In Instructor Polling Headquarters:

  1. Select an activity type (for example multiple choice, short answer, word cloud, or exit ticket) to open a new in-class poll.
  2. Use the info control (Show Polling Assignment Tips) for per-type instructions and sample images.
  3. While a poll is active, find it under Active Poll: and use End Activity when you are finished.
  4. Ended activities appear under Closed Polls:; you can expand an accordion to review overview tabs, graphics, and student response tables, and delete closed activities after confirmation.
caution

Opening a new activity closes other open polls in the course (not only in this polling session). This is intentional per-course behavior when you start a new in-class poll.

Review results​

Expand a closed (or active) poll accordion to see:

  • Response Rate and per-question tabs with participation graphics
  • All Student Responses (teaching team) or a single-row view (students on assignment details)

Live hub updates apply to the active poll accordion; reload or re-expand closed polls for the latest snapshot.

Troubleshooting​
