Map external-tool scores to proficiency levels

Overview​

When an assignment is backed by a Deep-Linked external tool (an LTI tool such as a quiz or lab platform that TeachFront launches out to), the tool reports a raw score back to TeachFront using the LTI Assignment and Grade Services (AGS) standard — for example, "8 out of 10." TeachFront translates that raw score into a proficiency level on each objective the assignment is linked to, using a set of percentage bands you configure per objective.

This is a different integration direction from linking a Canvas course into TeachFront (see Canvas LTI Integration) — here, TeachFront is the one launching an external tool and receiving its scores.

The objective → proficiency mapping screen is where teaching-team members set up and preview that translation.

Before you start​

  • The assignment must be a Deep-Linked external-tool assignment (created via your LMS's Deep Linking flow).
  • The assignment must already be linked to one or more course objectives.
  • Each linked objective needs a proficiency scale with at least one proficiency level.

Configure a mapping​

  1. Open the external-tool assignment from the Assignments list.
  2. Scroll to Objective → Proficiency Mapping. You'll see one mapping editor per linked objective.
  3. For each objective, set up bands: a band pairs a minimum percentage-correct value with a proficiency level from that objective's scale.
    • Bands must start at 0% and cover the full range up to 100% with no gaps or overlaps.
    • Use Add band to add another cutoff, for example "0% → Not Yet" and "70% → Proficient."
  4. Select Save mapping for each objective you've configured. The button shows Saved once the mapping is persisted.

If no mapping has been saved yet for an objective, the screen starts with a single 0% band pointing at that objective's lowest proficiency level — a safe starting point you can adjust before saving.

Preview a score​

Before (or after) saving, use the Instructor preview panel to check what a sample score would translate to:

  1. Enter a Score and the Out of maximum (for example, 8 out of 10).
  2. Select Preview instructor score.
  3. TeachFront shows the resulting proficiency level for each mapped objective, computed the same way the real score-translation pipeline computes it — for example, "8/10 → Proficient on Data Structures."

The preview reflects whatever bands are currently shown on screen, including edits you haven't saved yet, so you can check your work before committing to it.

How this connects to the gradebook​

When the external tool later reports a real student score with a "fully graded" status, TeachFront applies this same mapping to translate that score into a proficiency rating. The rating is created as a draft — a teaching-team member still needs to release/publish it (the same "Publish Ratings" action used for any other assignment) before students can see it in the gradebook.
