Course roster terms
Overview
This glossary lists accepted user-facing terms for the Course Roster area and related teaching-team workflows. Use these names in help articles unless you are quoting legacy UI or API labels.
Course roles and audience
| Term | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Instructor Owner | The top course role with full roster and course settings authority. |
| Teaching Team | Broad label for instructors, TAs, and other staff who manage the course. Pair with specific role names only when permissions differ. |
| TA | Teaching assistant. Document only where the TA role changes what someone can do. |
| TA (Resubmission Manager) | TA variant with resubmission-related permissions. Document only where that distinction matters. |
| Hidden Instructor | Instructor-only or internal-facing role label. Do not present as a general student-facing term. |
| student | Preferred audience term for people enrolled in a course. Use student instead of learner in customer docs unless quoting legacy UI or API labels. |
| Test Student | Special account used when an instructor views the course as a student (Student View). Instructors can see test students; other students cannot. |
Roster surfaces
| Term | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Course Roster | Primary area for members, sections, groups, and invites. |
| Course Members | Table of enrolled users and their roles. |
| Teaching Team Invites | User-facing name for inviting teaching-team members. Source rows may still show Course Invites. |
Sections
| Term | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Section | A roster subdivision. Students see their own section plus any joinable sections they may join. |
| Joinable Section | A section a student may join from the roster. Non-joinable sections stay hidden from unrelated students. |
| Section-linked content | Assignments, files, announcements, or calendar items limited to selected sections. Deleting a section may unlink or remove linked content depending on whether the content is shared (DEC-009, tentative until GAP-C02 code-fix lands). Confirm destructive confirmation copy before publishing section-delete guidance. |
Groups
| Term | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Group Set | Independent course structure for organizing students into groups. Note assignment links when group work applies. |
| Draft Group Set | Group set that is not yet published to students. |
| Published Group Set | Group set students can join or be placed into. |
| Self-Organize | Flow where students form their own groups within a published group set. |
| Join Group / Leave Group | Student actions for published groups. |
Invites
| Term | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Invite History | Record of past invite actions, separate from pending invites. |
| Pending Invite | Invite sent but not yet accepted. |
| Accepted Invite | Invite the recipient accepted. |
| Declined Invite | Invite the recipient declined. |
| Expired Invite | Invite past its expiration window. |
| Canceled Invite | Invite withdrawn by the teaching team. |
Destructive actions
| Term | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Destructive confirmation copy | Action-specific wording in roster modals before removing members, sections, groups, or invites. Match the UI confirmation for the action being documented (DEC-017). |
