Course roster terms

Overview

This glossary lists accepted user-facing terms for the Course Roster area and related teaching-team workflows. Use these names in help articles unless you are quoting legacy UI or API labels.

Course roles and audience

TermWhen to use it
Instructor OwnerThe top course role with full roster and course settings authority.
Teaching TeamBroad label for instructors, TAs, and other staff who manage the course. Pair with specific role names only when permissions differ.
TATeaching assistant. Document only where the TA role changes what someone can do.
TA (Resubmission Manager)TA variant with resubmission-related permissions. Document only where that distinction matters.
Hidden InstructorInstructor-only or internal-facing role label. Do not present as a general student-facing term.
studentPreferred audience term for people enrolled in a course. Use student instead of learner in customer docs unless quoting legacy UI or API labels.
Test StudentSpecial account used when an instructor views the course as a student (Student View). Instructors can see test students; other students cannot.

Roster surfaces

TermWhen to use it
Course RosterPrimary area for members, sections, groups, and invites.
Course MembersTable of enrolled users and their roles.
Teaching Team InvitesUser-facing name for inviting teaching-team members. Source rows may still show Course Invites.

Sections

TermWhen to use it
SectionA roster subdivision. Students see their own section plus any joinable sections they may join.
Joinable SectionA section a student may join from the roster. Non-joinable sections stay hidden from unrelated students.
Section-linked contentAssignments, files, announcements, or calendar items limited to selected sections. Deleting a section may unlink or remove linked content depending on whether the content is shared (DEC-009, tentative until GAP-C02 code-fix lands). Confirm destructive confirmation copy before publishing section-delete guidance.

Groups

TermWhen to use it
Group SetIndependent course structure for organizing students into groups. Note assignment links when group work applies.
Draft Group SetGroup set that is not yet published to students.
Published Group SetGroup set students can join or be placed into.
Self-OrganizeFlow where students form their own groups within a published group set.
Join Group / Leave GroupStudent actions for published groups.

Invites

TermWhen to use it
Invite HistoryRecord of past invite actions, separate from pending invites.
Pending InviteInvite sent but not yet accepted.
Accepted InviteInvite the recipient accepted.
Declined InviteInvite the recipient declined.
Expired InviteInvite past its expiration window.
Canceled InviteInvite withdrawn by the teaching team.

Destructive actions

TermWhen to use it
Destructive confirmation copyAction-specific wording in roster modals before removing members, sections, groups, or invites. Match the UI confirmation for the action being documented (DEC-017).
